- Rep. Kristen Cloutier, a Lewiston Democrat, has resigned from her seat to take a job as chief of staff to Maine Senate President Mattie Daughtry. Her departure narrows the slim majority Democrats have in the Maine House, where they now hold 74 seats compared to 73 held by Republicans. Three representatives are unenrolled. Cloutier, who was reelected to a fourth term last year, previously served as assistant majority leader.
- U.S. Sen. Susan Collins said Monday she’s optimistic that an agreement to reopen the federal government could be reached by the end of this week. Collins, a Republican, said her assessment reflects the desire of some senators — primarily Democrats — to wait until after Tuesday’s election to find a path toward reopening the government, which enters its 35th day.
