Have you ever wondered what happens to your trash and recycling after it gets picked up each Friday?
Pownal residents now have a unique opportunity to tour Ecomaine in Portland where it is hauled on November 12th, 2025 at 10am. You will get to see how Ecomaine does both Waste to Energy trash incineration and recycling processing.
Want to join the tour? Reach out to solidwastecommittee@pownalmaine.org as soon as possible. There are a limited number of slots available. Once we receive your name and email address, you will be sent an Ecomaine Tour Waiver which must be completed to be permitted on the tour.
Fill your bellies, your minds and visit with friends in our historic Mallett Hall on November 14th. Bradbury Mountain Arts potluck suppers are followed by guest speakers – our November guest speaker will be Garrett Conover who will talk about how to build a sauna.
Other speakers scheduled are George Rubino, a long-time bass player in the Portland Symphony Orchestra and who makes bows for stringed instruments; and John Attwood who will talk about his incredible artistic creations. Save the dates for the potlucks: Fridays, Nov 14, Jan 18, Feb 20, March 20 and Apr 17.

You are probably familiar with the Town of Pownal Free Sand Shed which is tucked behind the Town Hall past the employee parking area. It has a new neighbor. We are pleased to introduce the Town of Pownal Emergency Wood Bin.
The purpose of this bin is to provide households with wood to keep warm in the event of an emergency. If your regularly scheduled wood delivery is late and you are out of wood, the wood bin is here for you. If you are short on funds and you are out of wood, the wood bin is here for you. The wood bin is meant as a stop gap and at any given time, more than one family will be in need so take what you need for a day or two and please leave some for others.
We have Freeport Community Services to thank for this service. They implemented and will run the Emergency Wood Bin. FCS also runs the Freeport Wood Bank which provides free firewood to families who heat their homes with wood but struggle to afford it.
