Gov. Janet Mills on Friday urged Maine voters to oppose Question 1 on the statewide ballot this November, saying if the referendum passes it will only make it harder to vote. “Whether you vote in person or by absentee ballot, you can trust that your vote will be counted fairly. But that fundamental right to vote is under attack from Question 1,” Mills said in her radio address.
Faced with rising costs for fuel, power and feed, Maine beef farmers are being forced to choose between raising prices on their often cash-strapped customers or working for slimmer margins. Under the same pressures, some restaurants — even barbecue joints — are cutting back on beef items like brisket and pastrami in favor of more affordable chicken and pork.
Federal workers in Maine received what could be their last paycheck Friday as the government shutdown continues. With as many as 14,000 U.S. government employees affected in Maine, programs across the state are kicking in to offer help — including no-interest loans, unemployment benefits, and opportunities for jobs within state government.
