Maine’s housing crisis is hitting domestic violence survivors especially hard, with many shelters reporting that people are now staying longer because they have nowhere else to go. Advocates say more survivors are being forced to choose between abuse and homelessness, the Maine Monitor reports.
Maine ended its fiscal year with a surprise $152 million surplus — even after months of warnings that revenues were flattening. While the windfall can’t be used for new spending, it’s beefing up reserves like the “rainy day” fund and transportation projects.
