Maine Notes

Maine Beacon - Mainers’ views on health insurance companies have sunk even lower. New polling shows that only 15% of Mainers now view health insurance corporations favorably, down from 22% a year ago. That’s according to the latest polling* from the Maine People’s Resource Center (which is affiliated with Maine People’s Alliance, of which Beacon is a project). Meanwhile, 67% view them unfavorably, pushing their net favorability rating to -52. That’s a 12-point drop from last year’s already low -40.

The unpopularity cuts across the political spectrum. A majority of Republicans (55%) and even 56% of self-identified “very conservative” Mainers say they view insurance companies negatively. Across Maine’s two congressional districts and among both men and women, the industry has a net negative image.

Press Herald -   A federal judge has issued an emergency order halting the deportation of a Maine man who says he had been held illegally by immigration officials at the Cumberland County Jail for eight months. The Department of Justice said it began the deportation process for Eyidi Ambila, 44, after he challenged the constitutionality of his detention at the Cumberland County Jail in Portland last week.
