- Maine’s sewer infrastructure — aged, overtaxed and in some cases, nonexistent — is one of the greatest barriers to the state’s ability to meet its ambitious housing production goals. Towns across Maine are grappling with how to build their share of the 84,000 homes the state says are needed by 2030, with a sewer system nearing the end of its useful life. And some towns are consciously avoiding sewer upgrades to slow growth.

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Troy Jackson is urging his primary opponents to join him in rejecting outside spending by wealthy groups in the election. Jackson has signed the “People’s Pledge,” which calls on Democratic primary candidates to oppose “independent expenditures by wealthy, corporate and dark money groups” and on campaign supporters to either volunteer their time or donate directly to candidates.
