Maine News Tuesday

Press Herald -  Over the weekend, the U.S. and Israel launched strikes against Iran that upended the Middle East. Congress is set to vote later this week on a bipartisan war powers resolution that aims to limit Trump’s actions in Iran. Sen. Angus King, I-Maine, indicated Monday that he will likely support the resolution, while Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, has not yet specified how she will vote.

The Portland City Council voted 8-1 to postpone a vote on a proposal that would request annual payments from the city’s larger tax-exempt property owners in order to separate the issue from a recent controversy over several Portland nonprofits losing tax-exempt status. The Payment-in-Lieu of Taxes (PILOT) program seeks to offset the cost of city services and residential tax burden by asking tax-exempt institutions like hospitals and churches for voluntary payments.

Graham Platner - Too many establishment Democrats have stopped representing us and instead have become part of the same corporate, oligarchy apparatus as the Republicans.

They’d rather take money from AIPAC than condemn genocide in Palestine.

They’d rather take money from Big Pharma and insurance companies than support Medicare for All.

They’d rather cozy up to corporations and billionaires than support unions and organized labor.

And they’d rather put forward another cookie-cutter corporate Democrat than support someone ready to actually fight for our democracy.
