During her annual State of the Judiciary address on Thursday, Chief Justice Valerie Stanfill told state lawmakers that she is concerned about rising political divisiveness and an erosion of trust and respect for the courts. Her remarks come as lawyers and legal advocates nationwide have shared concerns about a growing lack of respect for the rule of law.
Maine’s three largest cities recorded just one homicide among them in 2025, according to Maine State Police, with most killings occurring in small towns and rural areas. Recently released data shows state police investigated 21 homicides last year, a dip compared to recent years. Both 2023 and 2024 were among the state’s deadliest, driven largely by the mass shooting in Lewiston and a series of back-to-back killings.
