- Maine’s K-12 students discard an estimated 8.4 million pounds of food annually. While that represents just 1% of the state’s annual food waste, it creates a “triple bottom line” of economic, environmental and social damage. A pilot program from UMaine’s Mitchell Center found big reductions in school cafeteria food waste, and a toolkit rolled out this fall will help schools prepare for food waste ban that starts in 2030.
