Little ones get a taste of farm life in Freeport

Dan Pilch, Freeport Happenings - An informal (non-official) gathering to talk about downtown housing projects in Freeport — this Saturday, January 10 at 10:00 AM, at the Freeport Harraseeket Grange, 13 Elm Street.  Hope to see you Saturday.

It’s no secret that we have a severe shortage of available and reasonably priced housing in Maine. A recent
study stated that we need around 80,000 new housing units by 2030 in order to make up for under-prodution and to meet future needs. That’s a tall order. Here in Freeport, we are 100% on board and eager to be a part of the solution as our region could be thought of as ground zero for the housing crisis. Available housing inventory is extremely low - there aren’t a lot of houses to buy. Housing prices are extremely high - according to Zillow the average house price in Freeport has risen to $659,000. Tariffs on kitchen cabinets, Canadian lumber, and other building materials are driving up the cost of construction. Persistently high mortgage rates aren’t helping either...

Growing our downtown is critical to growing Freeport. Every new tax dollar we collect from retail store landowners is one less dollar we have to ask from residents. More successful stores will bring in more tax dollars (and consequently, empty storefronts or declining lease rates will reduce the amount of our taxes covered by this commercial base). So what happens on Main Street affects everyone in town, whether you’re on Flying Point, near Webster Road, or on the Durham border....

I’m hosting an informal gathering to talk about housing this Saturday at the Grange on Elm Street at 10:00 AM. This is not an official Town meeting and will not include any votes, decisions, or new policies. It’s just a chance to gather as neighbors and talk about these and other potential projects. I can share what I know about each of them, and share a bit about my understanding of the permitting process.
