Maine Senate Dems - In last year’s election, 40% of Mainers voted by mail, and during the pandemic, up to 60%.
Whether it's due to distance from polling places, mobility issues, or challenging work schedules, many Mainers rely on absentee voting.
Ultimately, having that choice is essential to a healthy and functioning democracy.
On this year’s ballot, Question 1 would undermine absentee voting if passed, making it significantly harder for Mainers to participate in our elections.
Here are a few things Question 1 would do:
- ❌ Restrict the number of ballot drop boxes
- ❌ Ban prepaid return postage for absentee ballots
- ❌ Require voter ID and make requesting absentee ballots much harder
Supporters claim this is about preventing voter fraud, but Maine already has safeguards in place that actually work.
In reality, this is voter suppression in disguise. Absentee voting restrictions and Voter ID requirements don't prevent fraud — they prevent voting by targeting working families, rural Mainers, and seniors.
Question 1 represents a long-time effort by Republican extremists to suppress voter turnout. We cannot let fear-mongering chip away at our right to vote.
