Maine state agencies will soon send layoff notices to roughly 2,500 employees if the federal shutdown drags on and the future of federal funding remains unclear, Maine’s commissioner of administration and financial services told lawmakers Friday. Exactly when layoffs would begin is unclear. Federally funded positions are covered through Oct. 31, and affected workers would receive 10 days’ notice before their jobs end.

Thousands of Mainers are poised to be dropped from their Medicare Advantage plans in January, as insurers cut back plans or exit certain parts of the state entirely, according to the Maine Bureau of Insurance. The cuts will impact at least 36,875 people, though that number could rise. Martin’s Point plans make up the majority of the terminations, ending coverage for more than 28,000 members.
