- State auditor and former secretary of state Matthew Dunlap appears to be inching closer to launching a primary challenge against Maine’s 2nd District U.S. Rep. Jared Golden. If Dunlap does run and qualify for the ballot, Golden, 43, will be forced to spend time and resources defending his record, which is not popular with his base, before setting his sights on former Gov. Paul LePage, whose support is strongest in the rural, more conservative part of the state.
- Activists at a meeting Monday night challenged the Cumberland County Jail’s agreement to hold detainees for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and Cumberland County commissioners said they’re still unclear what their obligations are under state law. Critics have insisted that the commissioners can cancel the contract, but some county officials say Maine law requires them to house federal inmates regardless of a contract.
