Newscenter Maine -  A bipartisan cohort of New England's U.S. senators are urging the United States Coast Guard to delay the removal of navigational buoys off the coast of New England so they can better engage with stakeholders and understand the impacts of the proposal.

The letter to Coast Guard Commandant Kevin Lunday was signed by Maine senators Angus King and Susan Collins, New Hampshire senators Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan, and senators from Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.

In the letter, the senators asked the Coast Guard to extend the comment period for public input, undertake more extensive outreach, and enhance the compilation of data before making any final decisions on the removal of the navigational buoys. The Coast Guard has proposed removing dozens of navigational buoys from Maine waters in an effort to modernize. But some people in the boating industry worry about how this could impact safety, especially in the busy summer season.
