Maine Beacon - A new poll from the Maine People’s Resource Center (which is affiliated with MPA, of which Beacon is a project) shows broad public opposition to proposed state budget cuts and strong support for increasing taxes on high earners and corporations.
The survey of 754 Maine voters, conducted over the past two weeks, found that large majorities oppose cuts to housing, health care, and child care programs included in Governor Janet Mills’ initial budget proposal. Specifically, 63% of respondents opposed cuts to housing assistance, 62% rejected reducing Medicaid reimbursement rates, and 79% opposed cuts to child care provider wages and the Head Start program.
On the revenue side, 81% of Mainers support increasing income taxes on earnings over $1 million, and 68% support tax increases on income over $200,000. Cutting corporate tax incentives was supported by 57% of respondents. A $1-per-pack cigarette tax hike was also popular, with 69% in favor.
