Matt James, I96 Rocks - According to the Kennebec Journal, some Maine drivers may soon be hit with another fee to the tune of $250 bucks. And, even more wild, it actually has bi-partisan support. There's a sentence we're not used to hearing these days.
You see, Maine makes a decent amount of money on the state's 'gas tax'. Did you realize that part of the price for gallon at the pump goes to the state for things like road maintenance and repair?
Well, the state has taken a hit in recent years due to the popularity increase of EVs or electric vehicles. To help fill the gap, the Maine legislature is considering a bill that would charge Maine EV owners an additional $250 fee per year.
It might sound crazy, but Maine is only 1 of 11 states that currently doesn't have an 'EV fee', the KJ reported. The only people I can find that have been vocally opposed are environmentalist groups as they feel the added fee may deter people from purchasing electric cars.
