Portland Press Herald - U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi announced Wednesday the Trump administration is filing a federal lawsuit against Maine for allegedly violating a federal law to protect women from discrimination in education and other federally funded activity.

The U.S. Justice Department’s lawsuit seeks an injunction to prevent transgender athletes from competing in girls sports in Maine and calls for titles to be awarded to Maine girls who lost medals to trans athletes, Bondi said. It also seeks to cut off federal funding and pull federal funds retroactively, she said.

“The state of Maine is discriminating against women….  The Department of Justice will not stand by when women are discriminated against in sports,” Bondi said. “We have exhausted every other remedy.”

Press Herald - The Department of Education announced on Friday that it is starting the process of halting all federal funds going to Maine schools over the state’s defiance of a Trump administration order to stop allowing transgender girls to compete in girls sports. Superintendents across Maine said this week that the loss of around $250 million in federal funding would be felt by the students most in need of support services and the staff that work with them.
